So..........DC United v Olympique de Marseilles last night.

The first half ended 1-1. OM should have been 4 up but some poor finishing and a sloppy piece of goalkeeping somehow left the scores level. OM needed a creative spark.

Enter Payet for the second half.

By 59 minutes it was 1-5. Payet had 3 assists. Some player; his touch was brilliant. Final score was 1-8. OM scored at will in the second half.

Pal won two tickets to the Champions League final in 2000 at the Stade Du France in Paris, Real Madrid vs Valencia and took me.

. Saw Steve McManaman become the first Englishman to score a goal in the final....

I was at that game. I was with an ex MI6 agent on the run in France - he later became transgender & claimed to be the son of God.

Anyway, surely Bobby Charlton was the first Englishman to score in a European Cup final? Closely followed by Brian Kidd, Terry McDermott, Tommy Smith, Phil Neal, Trevor Francis, Alan Kennedy, Peter With, Phil Neal again, Teddy Sheringham.

Then Steve McManaman

Fucking awesome. Felt like I was at the centre of world events for a night, up in the VIP area. Saw Steve McManaman become the first Englishman to score a goal in the final.

Sat on the halfway line with one side of the stadium a sea of white and the other a sea of orange.

The only thing that has ever matched up was the semi-final championship at home against Ipswitch with Pardew, the greatest atmosphere I've ever experienced at Upton Park.

My ears were overloaded with distortion that night, and it felt more like religion than sport. The away leg almost matched it too.
